WRITING PRACTICE: Poetry
Fragments
The different lines in the poem about the tree are all fragments – incomplete sentences. These would all be errors in standard writing.

Which of the following are complete sentences? Which are fragments? Write a C for complete; write an F for fragment.
1. Poetry and music are very similar.

Similes and Metaphors
Write as many completions for each comparison as you can. Notice that the ones that have “as” or “like” are similes. The ones that say one thing is another are metaphors. You may have as many words as you want in your completions. They can be short: he is as smart as an owl. Or they can be long: He is as smart as a fox setting a trap for a chicken.
